I haven't written a weekly journal in a long time. Today, I want to record my recent insights on time management, mainly focusing on habit formation.

A month ago, I was recommended a time tracking software called Session
, so I immediately downloaded it to try.
For time management tools, I always feel eager to try them because I believe there is still a lot of room for improvement in this area. Additionally, I want to see how the creators of this product intend to solve the time management problem.
We often hear a self-deprecating saying: "The closer you are to the deadline, the higher your work efficiency." This is actually a time management issue.
Sometimes, after being busy for a while, I suddenly realize that what I am busy with is vastly different from what I originally intended to do.

After using Session
for a month, it has indeed brought some benefits to my time management.
1)With clear small goals, I am more focused
Since the time commitment is not long (default is 30 minutes), the goal is a very specific task, seeing the goal makes it clear what to do.
During this time, I constantly remind myself that unless it’s something very urgent, I won’t interrupt myself to do anything outside of my goals, always maintaining the main line of work.
The phone received a message, I won’t check it, I’ll continue writing my journal; the clothes are done washing, no rush, I’ll hang them after finishing the journal; SS sneezed, I’ll click the pause button in the middle of the image, go boil some water, check on them, it won’t take much time, otherwise, it might take even longer[Doge].
2)Increased control over my time
If you have a day to do something versus half an hour to do something, which time frame do you feel more in control of?
Of course, the latter. Compared to a day, there are fewer variables in half an hour, the likelihood of unexpected situations is lower, and it’s easier to stick to.
3)Improved mood
Because the goals are clear and the time is short, completing the plan is simple, and accomplishing the plan will definitely improve my mood; it’s addictive like leveling up in a game.
Additionally, Session
has statistical capabilities, allowing us to review regularly. Recently, I’ve been spending two sessions reading in the morning, and the focus effect has been quite good.

I also tried using Session
for time management at work, but found it unsuitable, at least for my job, because there are too many variables at work. For example, if a tester suddenly asks whether something is a bug or a feature, it’s hard to say, “I’m using Session, please come back later.” After a friendly exchange, I might even forget that I was using Session
.
Therefore, for tools like Session
, I think they are more suitable for helping us develop certain habits, such as reading or writing. When we find it hard to focus, we can try to fragment our time, even if it’s just 5 minutes; the key is to be able to stick with it.
As for time management for large tasks, I believe there is no specific answer because it involves various factors like experience, communication, and unexpected events. Instead, maintaining a mindset that is always ready to embrace change might be the key.
